Examines rituals and strategies runners use to help them perform at their best. Defines runners as a folk group who share a common goal-oriented mentality. Mentions strategies such as running in groups, and eating pasta and other carbohydrates the night before a race. Discusses the unity between running teams and groups. Describes some of the unique rituals individuals have, including eating specific foods before a race, wearing a certain article of clothing for every race, listening to a particular kind of music before a race, etc. Jackson explains that these superstitious rituals give runners confidence.
